Alphagan-P

Alphagan-P is an ophthalmic solution containing brimonidine tartrate, commonly prescribed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By lowering high IOP, Alphagan-P helps prevent damage to the optic nerve and slows the progression of glaucomatous vision loss.

The mechanism of action involves brimonidine's selective agonism of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the eye. When these receptors are stimulated, aqueous humor production is reduced, and uveoscleral outflow (the drainage of fluid from the eye) can be enhanced. The net effect is a decrease in intraocular pressure over time.

Alphagan-P typically comes in a preservative-free formulation, which can be gentler on the eyes for individuals prone to irritation. It is often administered one drop into the affected eye(s) three times a day, though dosing may vary based on clinical response and the presence of other eye medications.

Common side effects of Alphagan-P include eye redness, dry mouth, and a mild stinging sensation upon application. Systemic side effects, such as fatigue or dizziness, are less frequent but can occur, especially if the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Patients with cardiovascular issues or who are taking antihypertensive drugs should inform their eye specialist, as brimonidine can influence blood pressure and heart rate.
