Levaquin

Levaquin is the brand name for levofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. These infections include respiratory tract infections like pneumonia and bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and sinusitis. Because of its comprehensive range of antimicrobial coverage, Levaquin can be a convenient choice when treating infections that involve multiple or resilient bacterial strains.

The primary mechanism of action of Levaquin involves the inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase—enzymes crucial for DNA replication and repair. By blocking these enzymes, levofloxacin disrupts bacterial DNA processes, leading to the death of the bacterial cells. This mechanism generally spares human cells, making fluoroquinolones effective antibacterial agents in appropriate clinical settings.
